Opera not working with wifi
«
on:
November 11, 2009, 01:47:54 PM »
On my AT&T Pure, Opera does not load pages when I have wifi turned on. IE and all other apps that use data work fine with wifi. Anyone else have this issue or a fix?
It is as if there is no data connection for Opera when I have wifi on. I have tried With wifi on and "data connection" under the settings tab set to off, Wifi on and "data connection" set to on. Everthing else works both ways.

Although you seem to have checked the settings, I have noticed, from time to time, that sometimes my data setting has turned off by itself. This only seems to happen with I'm on IE with wifi on and then I switch to opera and it won't load pages. When I go check, most of the time it is because the data has been turned off. Can't pinpoint exactly why yet.

I agree. stupid opera.
I don't have a data-plan, so I only use wifi. Does this mean I can't use Opera?

It happens because Opera is defaulting to the data connection. There is a simple workaround.
Go to Settings, All Settings, Connections. Press Connections icon (again.) Then, go to the Advanced tab. Tap Select Networks.
There are two setting here. They tell your device when to use a particular network gateway. The bottom setting (private gateway) represents your wifi connection - home, work, where ever you are. The top setting tells the device to use the data connection proxy. This is only needed to access AT&T content, like Media Net and Cellular Video.
To get Opera working consistently through your wifi connection, change the top setting so it is the same as the bottom setting. Mine both say My Work Network. The only caveat is, when you want to connect to AT&T content or use the data connection to access the internet, you need to change the top setting back to Media Net.

Thanks for the advice dizzle, but it's a no-go. I was so excited when I saw your detailed post, but it turns out that's the way I already had everything set up!
I'm suspicious that you're unknowingly still using GPRS/3G(?) when you use Opera, since you have that option. If I'm correct, I actually have a data-block on this phone, so that's not possible.

Wow, I'm sorry that didn't help. Not sure how I could still be using 3G. To use a wifi connection, I have to run the proxy disabling app. Until I associate with an access point, I have no data connection. Then, once I am out of wifi range, if I don't renable the proxy, I can't access the web for google maps, etc.
So, both of your connections are My Work Network. The data connection is turned off and you ran the proxy disabler. Did you wait long enough for the web page to load? I know it takes mine over 30 seconds to load the first page. I think there is a timeout involved. Subsequent pages load quickly
Adding this 1/13/10 - Today Opera wouldn't load pages again. I went to the Select Network tab and My Work Network was still selected. So, I changed it to Media Net and clicked OK. Then, I went back in and changed it back to My Work Network. Opened Opera and my home page immediately loaded.

OK. Third day in a row Opera did not work the first time I tried to access the internet via a wifi connection. Third day in a row, I toggled the top Connections setting between Media Net and My Work Network. Third day in a row, Opera started loading pages via wifi connection.

well I'll be jiggered... your little toggle-trick worked this time. Now, I've got to decide if it's worth that hassle to use Opera. I've never really used it before.
Thank You!

Glad to hear it worked. I like Opera because you can double tap an area of a web page and get a perfect zoom.

I just downloaded Opera 10 beta and it works every time.
Installing it doesn't update the stock version of Opera. It installs into its own dir and creates a separate shortcut under All Programs. Get it, you won't regret it.

Found this...it should work for you too!
Open Opera
Type "about:config" (no quotes) as the url, then scroll down to the proxy section, tap it, and go ahead and uncheck all proxy related settings. (You may want to write them down, in case you need them later, and the existing entries vanish)
Save the new settings, and exit and restart Opera
